In 1989, a group of rising country artists signaled a change of landscape in the music scene. They are called the "Class of '89," and their meteoric rise to success also elevated country music to unprecedented commercial advancement. Behind this legendary moniker are Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Clint Black, Travis Tritt, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. All of whom put forward their unique taste to America's hillbilly. They became the standard to the next outcrop of artists in the country scene and redefined what the genre is about, not just to its avid listeners but also in the mainstream.
Clint Black took the traditionalist route in his style, but unlike his predecessors, he honed his twang to become the caliber country musicians must reach today. This authenticity in his music is a result of years of guitar-picking, playing the harmonica, and singing. In 1989, he released "A Better Man," his debut single and first attempt to break through the scene. Four months after it went public, the song climbed the charts and settled strong at the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. This record precedes his debut album "Killin' Time."
The album reached that dream breakout success. It spawned more chart-topper songs like "Nobody's Home," "Walkin' Away," and its title track. It also managed to add one more hit with "Nothing's New," which reached the top 5 of the charts. Black would then receive three platinum certifications and a prestigious Country Song of the Year from Billboard in 1989 for "A Better Man" and 1990 for "Nobody's Home." In addition, he received a Grammy nomination for the categories Best Country Song for "A Better Man" and Best Country Vocal Performance for "Killin' Time."
The success of this debut album left an indelible mark on the country scene and still makes waves in its influences. In 2024, Black celebrates the 35th year since his induction to the "Class of '89" with "Killin' Time." To celebrate it, he will headline an anniversary world tour. He has a renewed vigor for this coming celebration.
"Sometimes we had to think, 'Who played that part?' and things drift over time, they migrate. We've pulled some back to their origins. I think I'm singing these songs better now than I did, but pretty much it's going to be like the record," Black proclaims in a Billboard interview.
